Counselling: Brian Dennis MBACP (Accred.), M.A.

Counselling works with the issues that the clients bring to the counselling process, then often progresses to the real issues - which will commonly be different. We then will work towards understanding of how those issues originated and developed.

The issues which may trouble clients are varied; they may be internal issues which are 'belonging' to the client; there are also issues which can be considered 'external' to the client.

Internal issues may be those which the client decides for themselves, their own actions, their own behaviours, etc. External issues are those which the client have not decided, situations which are not under the client's control - e.g. nobody controls the weather.

There are also, of course, issues which are internal to the client with a considerable ingredient which is external to the client.

E.g. clients may consider that they are a good employee, then they are 'let go' by an employer because of situations over which the client has no control. An example may be a hard-working factory worker who does not influence the poor sales of the produced product.

Clients normally will advise the counsellor what is the issue that they wish to work on. Frequently the presenting issue will lead to other issues which may be the actual background origin of the problem. For some clients this can be a deeply rooted situation, which can be resolved with the counselling process.
